RFID Applications:
Examples of how RFID tags are currently used

RFID Technology is gaining popularity and is currently used in the USA, UK, Canada, and many other countries by warehouses, hotels and resorts, casinos, amusement parks, real estate developers, government, libraries, hospitals, and many other organizations. Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) has many different applications: for example, RFID makes it very easy for organizations to track anything from a case of apples, to aircraft parts, to office equipment, and even people! Here are some more examples of how RFID is currently used:

  • Wal-Mart is the first large retailer to require their 100 top vendors to place RFID tags on all cases and pallets.

  • RFID systems are used extensively to track assets and inventory in plants, warehouses and stores.

  • The Wynn casino in Las Vegas embedded RFID chips into their casino chips to prevent cheaters from using counterfeit chips. These RFID-enabled chips can also be used for market research, because the casino can now track and study the gambling patterns of their richest patrons.

  • In 1999, Airline company Airbus started using RFID technology in aircraft tool management. One of the biggest benefits of this new technology for the airlines is that it simplifies component repair management, where the repair and flight history of the component are available electronically.

  • Malaysia was the first country to issue RFID passports in 1998. RFID tags are now also embedded in US and UK and passports.

  • RFID passes are used for collecting transit fares in Canada (Montreal), Italy, France, UK, Russia, Belgium, Singapore, Korea and other counries.

  • Norway has implemented an RFID payment system called AutoPass for all their public toll roads.

  • Hotels and Resorts use RFID systems for guest check in and check out, as well as access to rooms and facilities.

  • RFID tags are used in ski resorts (for example, resorts in the French Alps) to allow skiers to have hands-free access to ski lifts.

  • Toyota offers a Smart Key/Smart Start option for their cars, which contains an active RFID circuit. The smart key contains an RFID chip, and it doesn't even need to be inserted in the lock in order to unlock a door or start the engine. One can simply hold the key within three feet of the lock in order to start the car or unlock a door.

  • Business offices use RFID to track and manage their mobile assets such as projectors and laptops, as well as paper files and documents.

  • RFID is used in the health care industry by hospitals in order to locate, track and protect their medical equipment, such as wheelchairs and IV stands.

  • RFID is also used in credit cards, ID badges, airline luggage tracking, apparel and uniform tracking, restaurant and convenience store payments, and more.
