About Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)
Multi-Factor Authentication is a process of confirming one's identity using more than two methods of identity verification. Typically, authenticating a person involves elements from one or more of these three categories:
- Something the person knows (for example, usernames, passwords, pass phrases and personal identification numbers (PINs) )
- Something the person has (for example, keyfob RFID tags, tokens, smart cards, name badges, ID cards, cell phones)
- Something the person is (for example, biometrics authentication such as fingerprints, palm scans, retinal scans, voice verification, face recognition)
With multi-factor authentication, a combination of methods is used in order for the identity to be verified. When a MFA system is in place, a criminal's ability to steal identities and gain unauthorized access is dramatically reduced. And so are the financial losses associated with security breaches and identity theft.
MFA allows organizations to move beyond the most primitive "username and password" type of security. Criminals and identity thieves are always coming up with new, innovative and sophisticated techniques to steal identities and gain unauthorized access, which is why traditional methods of authorization that simply rely on usernames and passwords are not sufficient. Passwords alone are not very effective because it is often possible to guess them. Relying on physical objects alone, such as ID cards, is not very effective either because these cards can be lost or stolen. But when a number of different verification methods are used at the same time, maximum security can be achieved.
Multifactor Authentication and Industry:
Multi-factor authentication, or MFA, is gaining popularity and many industries are now exploring ways they can integrate multifactor authentication into their operations. For example, financial institutions have made large investments into developing online banking and bringing customers to their web sites. However, with identity thieves constantly trying to hijack bank accounts through phishing, keystroke logging, Trojans and other strategies, banks need to enhance security through cost-effective Multi-factor authentication solutions that are easy for customers to use and don't cost the customers anything extra. If the security is not improved, and bank accounts continue to be hijacked, customer confidence can be dramatically reduced to the point where customers abandon conducting business online.
